Anime streaming site Crunchyroll will be entering the DVD publishing business this fall with Makoto Shinkai’s movie 5 Centimeters Per Second. They will be working with Bang Zoom! Entertainment to provide an English dub for the title. According to Anime News Network, Crunchyroll will be handling the promotion and financing of the endeavor and Bandai Entertainment will be packaging and distributing the DVDs for them. This is actually a re-license acquired after the closure of ADV Films. ADV had published their own DVD in 2008. VIZ Media will also be offering theatrical showings of the film in their San Francisco theatre on September 14th.
It is good to see so many companies coming together to get this great film out to as many people as possible. Shinkai is also known for The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Voices of a Distant Star, but 5 Centimeters Per Second is perhaps his finest work to date. The story centers around two friends who grow further and further apart with time and how they both struggle to stay in touch and cherish the memories of their youth together.
