Crunchyroll, known for their streaming anime and Asian drama website, has now launched an application for the PlayStation 3. The application is currently available for download in the U.S. and Canada through the PlayStation Network store. This initial version of the application does not allow for 720p or 1080p streaming, unfortunately, but according to the powers that be, an upgrade is in the works.

Crunchyroll is also offering a 30-day free trial for PS3 users so non-members can try out the service. Separate anime or drama memberships cost $6.95 per month while the all-access version runs $11.95.

From my personal experience, the roll-out of the application has not been perfect; I’ve run into some lag and audio de-synchronization. According to their support forums, there are already patches in the works, though. So, if you’re running into trouble, start there and see if you can fix something yourself until the patches come out. The application definitely has potential, and I look forward to seeing how they continue to improve it in the future.
