This might not be the long-awaited Doom 4 announcement people have been clambering for, but if you were itching to jump back into hell then it looks like Doom 3 BFG Edition will have you covered. It’s set to arrive on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC later this year.
Doom 3 BFG Edition collects the entire Doom series all the way to Doom 3 and its expansion Resurrection of Evil. Then you have the Lost Mission, which is an all-new seven level solo section adding in hours of new content. Both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 will be will be receiving a graphical boost, but judging by the looks of that trailer it doesn’t look like that big of an improvement. Doom 3 will also be receiving a few tweaks for the Playstation 3 version with 3D support.
Overall, this is an odd announcement this late into the console cycle, though with the influx of HD collections, I guess it isn’t too surprising that Doom would receive similar treatment. I’m just not sure if anyone asked for this. This seems like a marketing ploy to test the waters, to remind people that Doom is still and a thing and that it’s still relevant in today’s highly competitive market.
It potentially means a sequel to Doom 3 is on the cards over at iD, but in the eight years since the last game, the series has some big shoes to fill.
