Along with the Friday airing of the final episode of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya came the announcement of a feature film next spring. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is based on the fourth novel by Nagaru Tanigawa and Noizi Ito, Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu. As the name suggests, it covers a section of story in which Haruhi goes missing among other changes to Kyon’s reality. There is not a set date for the release of the film yet, but the SOS-Dan (Japanese) website should update with that information in the near future.

There was speculation back in December 2007 that Disappearance would be brought to TV this year due to the “disappearance” of the SOS-Dan page and subsequent replacement with the announcement of a new project. Instead, this year, a second, 14-episode series was broadcast that covered The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya from volume 2, Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody from volume three, as well as Endless Eight from volume 5.
