There was a time not so long ago that I was ecstatic that Kyoto Animation and Kadokawa finally got around to producing season 2 of The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. That lasted for about 3 episodes: Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, and episodes 1 and 2 of the Endless Eight arc. Then, KyoAni and Kadokawa decided it would be a great idea to keep making Endless Eight episodes. According to Anime News Network, eight of them to be exact, with the last one airing this week. I guess they thought that was clever. You see, Endless Eight in the light novel referred to the fact that they were stuck in an endless time loop in August (the eighth month).
The highlights of this arc are Yuki’s masks, seeing all the different kimonos during the Obon festival, and the fact that I now have a “Kyon-kun, denwa!” ringtone option for my phone. The downside is (sorry for a break of character for me, here) EIGHT FUCKING EPISODES OF THE SAME GODDAMN STORY. OVER. AND. OVER. AGAIN. *deep breath* Ahem. Furthermore, since anime is often sold in 2-episodes-per-disc format in Japan, that means that there are 4 volumes of this show with the same story. I hope KyoAni and Kadokawa realize that they’ve just killed their DVD sales for this show. Which is unfortunate, because then KyoAni might look at those sales and decide never to make a season 3. This was an absolutely terrible decision on their part. I’m just hoping that now that this part is over, we can get some real episodes the rest of this season.
