When Minecraft released last week on the Xbox 360 with 4 player split-screen and built-in “servers”, it was no surprise that it sold so well. In less than one day, the game sold over 400,000 copies, and Notch (the man behind the mine) said the console version had become profitable within 1 hour of it going live.

Well, Major Nelson has reported that as of today, with less than one week on the (digital) market, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has sold over 1,000,000 copies globally. It has quickly become the fastest-selling Xbox Live Arcade game of all time, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it become the highest-selling game as well. Major Nelson also posted a few fun facts:

  • Total Online Hours: 5.2 million
  • Multiplayer sessions: 4 million
  • Total Multiplayer gaming hours: 2.4 million

So will you be picking up Minecraft for the Xbox 360, or are you content with the up-to-date PC version? Sound off in the comments below!

  • I’m more than happy with my PC version of Minecraft. Then again, I don’t have an Xbox 360. If I did, I probably would buy this for the split-screen multiplayer though. The game has gotten more pricey since I picked it up (we got two copies for $14 or something like that) so it would be easier to introduce the game to people who haven’t played it with the Xbox version.

  • Yeah, as of now, if you don’t own a copy on the PC, the Xbox 360 version is cheaper (I think the PC version is $27, versus $20 on Xbox 360). Despite it not being fully updated, it’s nice to have split-screen, and built-in online.
