The game that started the whole Final Fantasy series is now available for download on the Wii. For 500 Wii points, you can grab the grandfather of them all. For those Final Fantasy fans who started with the later incarnations, this can be a chance to get back to the roots of the series. The NES title originally came stateside in 1990, and I personally have a deep fondness for the game as it was the first game I ever beat by myself on the NES, but even I have to admit that it shows its age.

Square Enix has been talking about releasing all NES and SNES Final Fantasies via the Virtual Console, and this is step one in realizing that plan. Good sales of the original title would probably persuade Square Enix and Nintendo to make sure the sequels all follow in a timely manner.
