Not everything at this year’s Tokyo Game Show was about video games. Square Enix also announced their digital manga service will be going live this winter, though their website still says “fall 2010.” Originally, the service was due to begin this fall, but the North American and French distribution channels have been delayed.
Once launched, Square Enix will be using their members website as the interface for their online manga store. The store will offer a variety of titles including Sumomomo Momomo, Soul Eater and Fullmetal Alchemist, but no pricing schedule has been announced. During TGS, Square Enix also showed of an iPod and iPad application for their Japanese store, but did not mention any intentions of a global release.
While Square Enix is best known in North America as a video game publisher, they also have a name in Japan as a manga publisher. There they also known for publishing a wide variety of shonen and seinen manga as well. Along with the above titles, they have published other popular series such as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, To Aru Majutusu no Index, Saki, Zombie-Loan.
