The Bad News: Screenplay to be written by Mark Protosevich, who wrote the “I Am Legend” screenplay.

Legendary pictures has secured the rights to make the Mass Effect Movie. BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will act as executive producers, together with the games’ director Casey Hudson. I’m kinda torn on how well Legendary will do at a live action adaption of the Mass Effect games.

Just for reference these are the pictures that Legendary has put out since they were founded in 2005.

* Batman Begins (2005)
* Superman Returns (2006)
* Lady in the Water (2006)
* The Ant Bully (2006)
* Beerfest (2006)
* We Are Marshall (2006)
* 300 (2007)
* 10,000 BC (2008)
* The Dark Knight (2008)
* Watchmen (2009)
* Observe and Report (2009)
* The Hangover (2009)
* Trick ‘r Treat (2009)
* Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
* Ninja Assassin (2009)
* Clash of the Titans (2010)

Most of these movies are visually quite spectacular but not always so engaging in the storyline.

The Mass Effect games have been really great (See our Reviews ME1 and ME2). They spared no expense on the writers and voice acting (I don’t mean just big names but actually getting them to show the proper tone and emotion in their voices). So I would be excited to see such a film but let’s face it, this is a Mature rated game, and there is no way they will make this an R rated movie. The bean counters will want to get as wide a range of customers as possible and that will mean gutting the story to keep it within a PG-13 rating.

Then if they manage to not make a totally horrible adaption they then have the issue that the game is about choices. You pick a Male or Female Shepard. You decide if (s)he is a paladin or a devil. Which do you choose when writing your script? Unless they take the route that the ME novels have taken. They follow the story of Shepard’s Crew and other characters whose ambitions, personality, etc..are predetermined, instead of being adaptions of the video game.

I’m gonna go see it when it’s released but I’m gonna do my best to leave my fanboi knowledge of the games at the door.
