Welcome to our latest edition of The High Notes! This week, we’re going to highlight some songs related to things we saw at New York Comic Con this year. For our con coverage, check out our first and second video blogs as well as this week’s episode of The G.A.M.E.S. Cast.
Durarara!!: “Uragiri No Yuuyake”
One of the first places we went to at NYCC was the Aniplex panel, and they had a lot of trailers for some of their upcoming releases. Durarara!! is one of the series that they mentioned, and it has a pretty awesome opening song. This anime is a little crazy, and this theme, while not as intense as you might expect it to be, seems to fit the show really well. “Uragiri no Yuuyake” has a great beat that will make you want to get up and move, and it’s hard not to get hooked on it. This song was performed by Theatre Brook and composed by Satou Taiji.
Anohana: “Secret Base”
Another anime panel we attended was the one for NIS America, and among the series they talked about was anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, an excellent series that our writers agree is a bit of a tear jerker. Anohana‘s ending theme, “Secret Base,” is so pretty and slow that even if you haven’t seen the series and can’t understand the lyrics, you’d probably be able to guess that it’s sad. Don’t let that stop you from listening, though, because it really is a wonderful song. The version from the anime is actually a cover of the original song by Zone, and in the show, it is sung by Ai Kayano, Haruka Tomatsu, and Saori Hayami, who voiced the lead female characters.
Tales of Xillia: “Progress”
One upcoming game we’re really excited about is Tales of Xillia, which we heard more about during Namco Bandai’s panel. You can check out a trailer featuring the games’ theme song here. “Progress,” sung by Ayumi Hamasaki, is a pretty epic song. Listening to it will make you want to dive into the world of Tales of Xillia as soon as possible, though you’ll have to wait until sometime next year, so perhaps you can content yourself with Tales of Graces f for now.
Ni no Kuni: “Kokoro no Kakera ~ Fragments of Hearts”
If you’re a fan of Hayao Miyazaki’s movies, you’ll spot Joe Hisaishi’s stamp all over this theme from Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. A snippet of the song plays during the trailers for the game, and the full version is just so hauntingly beautiful that it will leave you with chills. We actually had some hands-on time with Ni no Kuni at NYCC, so be sure to stay tuned for the footage from that when it goes up.
That gives you a pretty concentrated glimpse into our time at NYCC by way of music. We hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage of the convention! Keep checking back for updates on interviews we did last weekend, and don’t forget to stop by once every week for a new musical spotlight. Feel free to jump in and talk about your favorite music from games and anime in the comments.
