This week’s UnConventional Wisdom comes from our own backyard:  Gainesville, Florida!

This time around, The G.A.M.E.S. Blog will be there!

What: Swamp Con
When: Saturday, January 14th, 2012 (noon-11pm)
Where: Reitz Student Union, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida

Catering to a variety of interests, Swamp Con is an all-in-one Anime/Gaming/Sci-Fi convention to be held on Saturday, January 14th at the Reitz Student Union on the University of Florida campus.

There is no shortage of diversity here: Swamp Con will have everything from Anime/Sci-Fi screenings to computer/console game tournaments; entertainment ranges from a maid café to a Doctor Who musical!  The event also features cosplay, an artist’s alley, tabletop role-playing games, panelists and more!

Stop by our panel, “How Do You Break Into Game Journalism?” with our very own Dan Furnas, Gregory Barbe and Shaan Joshi from 2pm-3pm.  Don’t forget to bring your Nintendo 3DS for StreetPasses afterward!

For those who are more interested in the manga, cartoonist Tom Hart will be discussing his time working in the manga industry.

Thinking about pursuing a career in writing?  Check out Aya Knight’s “Aspiring Writers:  Tips and Info on Creating Your First Novel”.

Dr. Joseph Murphy will also be discussing the American Otaku consumer subculture as a “data-base culture” as described in Hiroki Azuma’s Otaku: Japan’s Database Animals.

Swamp Con is also featuring the GatorLAN Winter WonderLAN; space is limited, so be sure to register early!

Admission is free.
