Yesterday, VIZ launched a new application for the iPad (and not iPhone or iPod Touch) called “VIZ Manga.” The free application lets you buy digital copies of six of VIZ’s most popular manga: Dragon Ball, Bleach, Death Note, Naruto, One Piece and Bakuman. Each volume is priced at $4.99 (half the price of a physical copy) and the first volume of Death Note is currently a free trial offer.

VIZ wants to expand their offerings in the future to include Ouran High School Host Club, D.Gray-man, Vampire Knight and Rurouni Kenshin in the near future. When asked by Publishers Weekly, Viz Senior Vice President Alvin Lu hinted that support for other Apple devices may be in the future, but did not want to say anything specific.

Call me old-fashioned, but I personally still enjoy the feel and smell of a book in my hands. It’s part of the experience for me. However, if you’re a big manga fan and you don’t mind electronic copies, this is a pretty nice, and legal, way to get them.
