VIZ Media is now offering an advertisement-supported version of Shonen Jump Alpha, their digital manga magazine, to Android phone and tablet users. Once the VIZ Manga app is downloaded, users will see a “free” option on the Shonen Jump page. Users can then choose a promotional offer in order to receive that week’s issue for no cost. Typically, a subscription to Shonen Jump Alpha will run you $0.99 per week or $25.99 per year.
While the Shonen Jump Alpha application is available for iOS devices, and issues are also available via the VIZManga site, this ad-supported offer has only been announced for Android phones and tablets. VIZ Media has made no announcements about whether iOS devices will support the option in the future.
For those who want to read the manga without having to share their credit card information, this is a nice option to have. However, it really depends on what the ads and offers are about. When I tested the offer out, I was given a list of five games to download on my phone, but I don’t know what other options are out there. Would you download a new app every week for free access to manga? See any questionable offers on there? Let us know in the comments!
